Senator David Pocock has sharply criticised the Albanese government’s latest gambling reform package, calling it “tragically short” of what is needed to tackle Australia’s gambling crisis.

After more than 1,000 days since the landmark Murphy Review was released, the government has finally outlined its plan — but many experts and politicians believe it falls well short of meaningful change.

“This Won’t Fix the Problem”

Pocock argues that the proposed measures fail to address the root cause: aggressive gambling advertising that is normalising betting, especially among young Australians.

Recent studies show that 75% of young people now see betting as a normal part of watching sport — a direct result of constant exposure to ads from operators like Sportsbet, Tabcorp and others.

What the Government is Proposing

Instead of a full advertising ban recommended by the Murphy Review, the plan includes only partial restrictions:

– Phased removal of gambling ads from sports jerseys and stadiums

– Some limitations on celebrity and athlete endorsements

– No strict limits on gambling ads after 8:30pm, including during live sports broadcasts

Critics, including Pocock, say these half-measures will simply shift advertising rather than reduce it.

Industry Influence Concerns

There are growing accusations that the final version of the reforms was significantly watered down due to heavy lobbying from the gambling industry. The current package is reportedly much weaker than earlier internal proposals.

Public Health at Risk

Health experts warn that continued exposure to gambling advertising is directly linked to:

– Rising gambling addiction rates

– Increased financial harm

– Worsening mental health issues, particularly among young men

What Happens Next?

The debate is far from over. Pocock and other reform advocates are pushing for much stronger action, including:

– A full ban on all gambling advertising

– Creation of a national gambling regulator

– Strict limits on free bets and other inducements

What This Means for Australian Players

While any reform is better than nothing, weak regulation continues to benefit big gambling operators at the expense of player protection. At pokie.info we believe Australian players deserve safer, more transparent options — which is why we only review properly licensed and regulated casinos.
